I was prepared for a hard 2 hour watch with subtitles and wondered if I’d be able to stay the course. However I stayed till the last title disappeared from the screen. Capernaum is a beautifully made film which exposes the terrible lives many people have to live. In spite of its grim reality, it tenderly delves in to human compassion, intelligence and resourcefulness and involves the viewer completely. I was never bored and never had difficulty with the subtitles. In spite of the struggles of daily life for a great many in Beirut ( it could apply to many cities I’m sure) I feel enlightened and educated by having watched it. It gives a real insight into the reality of being a non person, without papers in your own country. It also touched on the hierarchy of migrants. I was sad when I came out but I feel I know and understand a bit more. A masterpiece of a film.
