The best review I've read for this movie was that the extremely talented Mr. Phoenix deserves an Oscar but 'the Oscar doesn't deserve him.' I agree. I hate DC and Marvel movies, but I've sat through many for years because of my son. The media shouldn't be telling audiences to avoid it, since it's a lesson in what can happen when society shuns/bullies the mentally ill. This film is so unlike all the others that came before it that it will make it that much harder for me to sit through any upcoming superhero films, and it's also made me more sympathetic toward the Joker than rich, privileged Batman.
