It's a great book and in my idea, it does not have anything to do with history or the job, it relates to all humans, to how we restrict ourselves and try to convince ourselves about taking the only right path which is determined for us. I also found Stevens sincerely surrender to Mr. Darlington a simulation of how we are taught to accept and worship God without asking; because it's a kind of disrespect. all of these were my perception of the novel, however.
My recommendation to those who didn't get the book or found it boring is to read it once again without expecting it to be an adventurous novel. Just try to get in the shoe of the narrator.
