What elements does one need to make a great film? Brilliant script, fine acting, great background score? well, cinema at its purest form does not depend on any of them, it relies on visual composition, rhythm, and movement. ROMA (2018) by Alfonso Cuarón is a pure cinema of the 21st century, it tells the story and about the characters more by meticulously designed breath-taking images than the characters themselves do. Every shot, every sequence is there to convey an emotion, subtly trying to reveal something about the characters. ROMA is a very very personal film Cuarón made, and he proves once again what a genius director can produce if he is given total freedom to make a film for himself. Wide shots, long takes, use of ambient sound and superbly choreographed and composed images make ROMA one of greatest artistic achievement in the language of cinema. ‘’ROMA is a masterpiece’’ will be a huge understatement, it’s something that really makes cinema an art.
