Abookaboutniggas Vol.1 is a sharp, refreshing and laser-focused drive through the often uncomfortable and at once painful path we go through to find love. For years, the writings in this collection lived online, both presently-nowhere and omnipresent thanks to the internet's reach. The close, arms-length span of a Southern college campus sets some of the backdrop, but Marie Thomas somehow captures a spirit that can be felt anytime, any place by those with the electrifying misfortune of being young and sentient.
The narrative collection is bolstered by Thomas's snarky exploration of racism, gender and social media. Our main character is one fascinating girl, but really she could be anyone. It's through Marie's voice that we as readers get to explore her heritage, feelings, revelations that inspire any reader brave enough to explore her world.
Marie Thomas is a 24-year old graduate of Spelman College currently residing in her hometown of Denver, CO.
