For those who also appreciate the more plausible Space sci-fi storylines, the story was a bit slow at first, but the grim circumstances of the plot, (a single survivor at an Arctic research station of an Extinction Level Event) made the pace appropriate.
The crew of the exploration ship returning to earth was cool and professional in dealing with their situations, as you would expect from highly trained and educated Astronauts on a multi year mission. A good job was done in succinctly portraying the crew, especially the Commander’s thoughts when dictating his log.
The effects were well done, and didn’t require huge battles with aliens to be effective in emphasizing plot points.
The Science could have been more accurate in a few areas, and one major line of the story was not adequately explained, SPOILER HERE......................................
In one of the Captains log entries, he mentioned that as well as no hearing from Mission Control, or any other Earth based source, they were also unable to raise the “K23 Colony Flight” ship that was headed towards the Jovian moon K23......
did this flight ever leave Earth, or was it a casualty of the Extinction Event?
The movie’s final scene seemed to imply the the Captain and his pregnant fellow crew member, who were going to swing around Earth, and get a gravity slingshot-boost back towards K23, would be like Adam and Eve, which we know would not work. A viable human population to populate K23 would not be possible from a single couple, unless they were somehow able to genetically repair diseases caused by inbreeding.....but Capt was a Mathematician, and the female was an Engineer Mission Specialist, neither was an Med Doctor-Genetics expert.
All in all, still an enjoyable film for me.
