This series is amazing. It's one of the darkest, most gripping and suspenseful dramas I've watched a very long time, vampires or no vampires. Ultimately, it's a story about families: the Radescus, but also the Nemeths and the larger Community.
But this IS a vampire story, make no mistake about it. It may be located in a completely modern, contemporary Paris but this is pure gothic horror.
And the vampires are legitimately creepy and menacing, even at the same time as they're sexy, which is exactly what vampires are SUPPOSED to be.
It should be mentioned that this series draws heavily on the setting of the pen & paper role-playing game, Vampire: the Masquerade. Actually, let's be blunt: Vampires rips the game off wholesale. This isn't a criticism. Vampires feels very much an homage to the World of Darkness. VtM fans will understand. And if you love this series and aren't familiar with the game -- WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU? ;P
