This is an incredible film for fans of Godzilla. Imagine every Godzilla movie you’ve ever seen filtered through a Hollywood budget and stacked with a-list stars and you are going to comprehend what this movie is, only it has a lot more action than your typical Toho iteration. Sorry, no time travel, that’s about the only element that didn’t make it into this one however, and it’s pretty rare even for Toho, so no worries.
For non-Godzilla aficionados, this is big dumb sci-go epic disaster movie storytelling with an interesting James Bondian world destruction plot motivated by climate change fears and executed by a typically sympathetic character that wouldn’t be considered for the big bad in any other movie of this kind. I think that’s a very interesting creative choice. Honestly, people should really stop and give some credit to the choices this movie makes. Fascinating.
The critics at large are trashing this movie for having uncompelling or incomprehensibly motivated humans. I’m no film slouch, and this movie probably isn’t going to be selected for the safekeeping in the Library of Congress down the road, but I honestly don’t understand the criticism. It’s like critics are saying things they think might apply to big dumb Hollywood blockbusters because they didn’t bother paying attention to what was actually on screen.
Let’s admit it’s true that every alien invasion / sci-fi fantasy disaster film has a very similar plot. Yes. Understood. Just like every genre. The ones considered interesting are the films that maintain their genre while adding interesting ripples or twists into the mix. So far as I’m concerned making a family the good vs. evil dynamic of this particular globe hopping disaster film is a pretty novel foundation.
It’s really just hard for me to understand the rationale behind certain criticisms. I’m not feeling the honesty on a lot of it. I get it, it’s not an Indy drama, but man, this is a lot of fun and almost exactly what a Godzilla fan could hope for, or anyone looking for an interesting blockbuster disaster film!
