I can say this movie had a very similar feel as that of tumbaad. thrilling, artistic and awesome sound and narration. Before watching this i was a little sceptical about how will such a vfx demanding story can be executed in the times of 1970s and to my surprise this is something i’d never seen till date. The poetic narrative of the entire film kept me engaged in the story and i can not forget to mention the beautiful eyes of raisa.
There was a shot when dhulan keeps her left hand on bhoot’s shoulder and after which she looks at him. Raisa’s eyes were so mesmerising and breathtaking that i instantly fell in love with her looks. this kept me engaging. The vibrant, lively and colourful art direction of the film is as much admirable as any other matter in the film. i assume that mani kaul must have painted the entire house white intentionally as it was the best choice for the film artistically as it created a perfect contrast and silhouette between the actors and the location.
The entire film felt like my grandmother is telling me a story and this is what i really love about such films. No need of extra special effects, subtle emotions conveyed effortlessly via great performance, ambience of the entire film, sound and much more. Though throughout watching this film i was imagining if such story has to work in today’s time then it will definitely have to have some special effects but not to the extreme one might assume.
i would love to recreate this story via directing it myself in the future as i saw this entire movie from the angle of dhulan as she had almost no control over her life but when something strange as the bhoot appers in front of her she thinks it through and actually make a conscious choice of accepting him and loving him and similarly i also appreciate the bhoot’s character as he is very straight forward about his sudden disguise and this too is really point noticing. this was a great love story and also a story of a girl who’s supposed to keep quiet even after everyone around her without her consent does whatever they want to. and at the end i had a feeling that only thing she looks up to after her lover got thrown away in river is the child that he has left behind and i felt as if the only purpose left for dulhan now is to nurture the kid and to remember this short lived but profound live event.
