Although I’ll say that the shooting, costumes, and sets were absolutely amazing, this movie has some of the worst writing I’ve seen. The main characters are narcissistic and not super likeable to begin with, but there is no character development AT ALL. I understand probably supposed to be a slice of life kind of film, but most of it made me uncomfortable or boring as the content was not relatable. Maybe in the 70s it was more normal for a 25 year old woman to decide to hit on 15 year old guy, but it just made me not want them to be together for MANY reasons. There are several times through the movie where it feels like the characters are realizing their differences and they begin separate plot lines as if they are starting to grow into themselves and apart from this inappropriate “relationship;” however, they always continue to hang out each other anyways. The writing was so cringey in some parts as well (who wants to hear a 25yo woman tell a 15yo guy “You’re not cool. I’m so much cooler than you”). I think the writing was so bad that it made me not enjoy the actors, which probably actually did well.
I think I laughed a few times in the first hour, but the second hour was unbearable. Because none of the glaring issues ever truly resolved themselves, it really didn’t matter where the movie was going to end. At any point in the movie they could have brought the characters together to actually begin their relationship and I feel like the audience would have felt the same as where they ended it. Before this I had only been to 2 movies that I considered walking out of. I can definitely say that this movie can get added to the list.
Went with my sister and we left the movie so quickly once the credits rolled.
Side note: near the end we secretly hoped the lookalike murderer storyline and the politician office stalker storyline would actually link at the end and that both or at least one of the main characters ended up being murdered.
I actually probably have a lot of side notes. I could go on about my thoughts. Almost none of them positive.
