Marcus Cool

This is an underrated movie. It has everything I’d want to scratch my sci-fi itch. Epic visuals, great action, showing off intricate sci-fi tech and design, and an interesting story along with a mysterious lore to the world’s setting. The acting, musical score, and pacing were all very well done. Story-wise, there are a few things that I would’ve liked to be fleshed out more on screen. The whole concept of the world and how we got there is so interesting that I wanted to imagine seeing it unfold. We get tidbits through a few flashbacks and explanations, but I couldn’t help wanting more of that lore. That being said, it didn’t feel rushed, and the story put out front kept me engaged and still left me feeling satisfied. It’s not a top of the top 5 star movie that’ll knock my socks off, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. This will be added to my list of go-to sci-fis when I’m in the mood for a good one.

This movie moves slow with no real direction. It was a 2 hour repeating cycle where every potentially interesting plot point reaches it’s climax and then abruptly flatlines. I’ve seen the phrase “Oscar bait” thrown around, which perfectly describes the poor manner in which the current hot topics are handled. I was confused the entire time and it’s not because of a lack of understanding. I was confused because I tend to hold on to details as being significant to the plot. The movie showed me many things that were pointless. Much like a story told that strays down a very detailed rabbit hole, only for the point to be summed up in a few sentences. As previously mentioned, the hot topics were handled poorly. There was no depth, or any real point to include them. The movie made sure to bring a startling amount of light to these “hot topics”. So much attention was given to these details that I thought the movie was actually about them. Hell, I bet most people only know of this movie because of it’s apparent edginess with those topics. Well the movie isn’t even about them, but something else entirely. I knew it too… As soon as I saw how many awards this thing was getting, I knew it would be hammed up with some PC stuff for the sake of recognition. Instead, the movie just comes off a pretentious. *****SPOILERS***** The hot topics were -Toxic masculinity -Homosexuality -Compensation for insecurities *****SPOILERS***** The movie had nothing to do with any of this. It was about the tension between a newlywed couple and the husband’s brother. This conflict is the only resolution you will see. Every other path the movie starts down ends up nowhere.
