Potentially my favorite game of all time. Everything is perfect in this game. The atmosphere is bleak and sets the tone immediately but never overwhelms the player with little bursts of comedy, like with the grubs, and the NPCs. The combat is fine tuned to perfection, at the beginning you learn that spamming the attack is not effective, and later in the game after you've gotten spells and charms you have to balance out your game play, and learn when to use these. The characters all have seem to lost their hope, and often give cryptic advice, or tell you some short stories. Hollow Knight contains some of the best characters I have ever seen, and you feel horrible whenever something happens to someone. The animation on this game is beautiful. I can revisit this game for decades and still be blown away from the visuals. All the attacks are choreographed and come with this big sound effect making it easy to predict it and dodge. Much of the attacks are not flashy and you can still clearly see the action. However when you get hit, huge effects take up the view of your character, and feels like you have really gotten hurt. Your moves are quick, and refrain from being overly complicated, with your nail having a pretty basic moveset, but realizing the quirks of your moves, and eventually gaining powerful attacks for your nail. Most of your weaker spells are easy to understand, and take up little room on the screen, however the more powerful spells that are upgraded are huge, and feel like you have released the wrath of a god on a bug. The basic enemies usually have one or two moves, allowing to remember their pattern quickly, but the game throws more and more enemies at you, the difficulty slowly rising. The bosses almost feel like upgraded versions of the base enemies, letting you use your knowledge on a enemy you have faced many times to take down a much tougher enemy with unique moves spicing up the fights. I could drag on and on about how perfect this game is, but I've hope I have sold you so you can play a timeless masterpiece. Also, Quirrel is best boy.
