Despite the problems, like some redundant mechanics, awkward physics, awkward-to-navigate menus, and perhaps too easy combat, this is an insanely fun platformer. It's always fun to figure out the layouts of the levels and their puzzles, and the collectathon elements are on point. The atmosphere, story, art direction, and character design are superb, as expected. The game also perfectly nails that NiGHTS feel of overcoming insecurities and trauma when it comes to the story. The only thing I'd maybe change is that I'd spread the story of each character throughout the acts. For example, provide the introduction cutscene after the first act to familiarize with the character and their inner world as well as ease up the mystery, maybe an existential conversation with Lance about what's going on in each character's head before turning into their boss form to make it more emotionally gripping, and then the closing cutscene after the boss, instead of just dumping it all at the end. The Isle of Tims is a nice and very addicting homage to the Chao Garden, so I recommend the game to fellow Sonic fans as well.
All in all, Balan Wonderworld is a beautiful and engaging platformer with an atmosphere that's so captivating, I'm actually having trouble even acknowledging the game's fair share of shortcomings.
I don't regret keeping my faith in you guys throughout the rocky pre-release period and preordering the game at full-price. I also can't wait for Balan Company's next project! <3 Just a liiiittle bit more polish next time should do the trick...
This was a review of the PS4 version of the game.
