I have just finished a film. Here's a review for those who don't wanna waste too much time:
Pros:
- Lovely acting!
- Fantastic music!
- I love how the camera is a square and is in black and white!
Cons:
- The dialogue. I love how it's in an older dialect, but it's hard to listen to what they're saying under their mumbles. It's hard to follow the movie when 60% of their dialogue is mumbling.
- The Plot. More accurately, what the hell is happening. It's rather confusing, and I find myself having difficulty following along. What's with the mermaid, and what does she want with him? Why are there tentacles? Why do the seagulls hate him? I can certainly accept the mystery of the Lighthouse, but what's with everything else?
There's danger everywhere, but what's the main threat? The lighthouse? Maybe when it's attracting him, sure.
- What's it trying to do? I don't know, but I feel like not even the film knows what it's trying to do.
SPOILERS!!!
- The Ending. What? Huh? I liked the scene where he put his hand in the light, but why's he being eaten by birds? Is it in reference to Prometheus? I understand that some mystery must be retained to keep the scare factor and intensity, but there comes a point where my fear turned into complete confusion. The movie felt like it was promising to tell us what 30-60% of what the stuff going on was (To keep the mystery), but I don't even know 5% of the threat. The mermaid/siren, the seaguls, and the lighthouse. The only thing I know about the threats is that they exist. that's it.
I really want to love this movie, but it's like ending Star Wars at The Phantom Menace. I suppose I do enjoy the ending to an extent, and I can definately see what they were going for.
