Perfect film for solo watching on a Sunday evening. If you grew up in the 90s, identify as any part of gen x— you will experience waves of nostalgia through this film. It’s fascinating to watch Hollywood at that time —(I currently live in LA so perhaps even more so for myself). I grew up with Punky Brewster so this was like a warm hug from a lost friend.
The exploration of the dark side of fame, adolescence and the 90s was well done. It is candid, raw and explores both the beauty and messiness of life itself. The fragile human existence, the hardship, the intrigue of life—and the dissonance/awkwardness of adolescence and Gen X melted my heart.
There was something especially nostalgic about this film— this was before internet, cell phones and the constant idea that a camera is watching you. This was through Soleil’s eyes and how incredibly lovely it is to be able to watch her tell her story.
