Pat Barker has written some fine books. This isn't one of them. Had to give up less than halfway through. Clunking and full of fillers I can't think why she wrote it. If she thinks she knows how men view women sexually she's quite mistaken. The characters have no life in them. Oh...and she thinks birds live in nests...

I do remember Barry Foster's Van Der Valk with fondness. The new one is quite watchable. It's a bit loopy, but that's ok. He's a bit dodgy, a bit of a lad, which works for me. So glad the new guy on the team hasn't been shot yet, which is such a cliche. Having spent time in Amsterdam it's great to see familiar scenes in that beautiful city.

Enjoying this after two episodes. Good pacing without the usual American need to explain everything. Quibbles. If Forest had doubts about Sergei being Russian why employ him? Surely background checks would have revealed his situation? Why was he allowed to take his camera watch into the centre? And why was he so hamfisted about recoding the coding? After all, surely they just needed to take his watch from him?
