Real mixed bag of a show. It is called a romantic comedy..but I found the laughs hard to come by. I guess if you like awkward cringe comedy it might be for you. It is called “love” but as someone on here said, the characters problems seem more general than love related. The guy is basically meek with a huge passive aggressive streak, because of the niceness. I think they are going for the old nice guys are not really that nice thing. The girl (Jacobs) has the “showier” problems as she is addicted to many things and is more of a mess all around. I watched this and can say I am not sure what apatow and Rust was trying to say with this pairing. Other than the guy character knowing looks wise maybe she is slightly out of his league I am not sure why he puts up with her. She cheats on him and do not seem to have anything in common. Plus, what is shown as “negatives” are debatable as he just seems to be in the wrong career (Hollywood) for his personality type. His nerdy side would be perfectly fine in other jobs and life choices. Instead of maybe examining maybe he has the wrong goals, they instead show he must change. Same for the female character. They never really examine, despite three seasons, why she is that attracted to him also. His passive aggressiveness would probably kill any romance right out of the gate. Plus, her solving her self esteem issues would probably equate to her wanting to date someone with more prospects and treats her better. But the show seems to be literally love conquers all. If that is for you, you will like it.

This might set a new standard for dark comedy. Although hilariously funny, especially the Chechans, it is really surprising how dark this show gets. It is almost like a mashup of a great sitcom with a dark as night tale about a hit man who pulls no punches. The cast is all very good, and the show using acting as a commentary on Barry’s other job works. My only complaint is I do get the feeling the last fifteen minutes of the last episode really played way too dark.it would have worked if this series was a one off, and in its defense maybe that was originally the intent which excuse the uncompromising grimness, but they announced it was renewed for season two and I really do not see where this show can really go after this. I said this after the equally excellent first season of Jessica Jones. The matrix also applies. Unfortunately, I was right there too. Sometimes a show just screams that this should be a one season show that told a tale and told it well. This is one of those shows. Although this series is an A plus, I am just not seeing where it could go after the finale that makes sense without ruining the first season. Barry is pretty much broken and irredeemable. As a pitch black comedy experiment for a season, that works..for a regular series? I don’t see it

First season was great, but it really squandered the potential that got it saved and moved to the CW. The pluses are Melissa Benoist, this really is the role she was born to play and is easily the best actor talent wise in the Arrowverse. Also, the cast has a great chemistry and brainiac has been a real plus and injected must needed comic relief. The central role Kara and Alex has as sisters is also novel and this show does not fall back on the sometimes awful romantic subplots that plague the other DC CW shows. But the bad is the writing. It is just awful. Supergirl is one of those shows that is too adult for kids (lots of politics and sexuality issues that parents would not like) but too sloppy plot wise for adults. If it were a kids show, you could forgive it. But since it wants to be an adult show, just too many people notice all the holes, bad dialog and just poor world building. This is a show where one character wants a baby..then doesn’t. One character makes a big speech about the president wanting to build a wall..yet on this earth an alien is secretly president and is (was) very pro alien, so what they heck was she even talking about?, major villain wants supergirl to reveal her “secret identity”, yet supergirl does not wear a mask and there is no reason why anyone would even think she has a secret identity..Just a very weird lack of attention to detail plagues this show, like it does not even care about what was established factually before on the show. It is whatever is needed for the plot of the week, even if it makes no sense to people who watch it all the time The politics are just high school-ish and eye rolling even if you agree with the overalll points. The writers are just not talented enough..This season, the pro immigration point does not even make sense in this universe..since it has been invaded by aliens like four times who tried to kill everyone on earth and the president was a secret alien pushing an pro alien agenda. Common sense would tell you that if any world would be angry and fearful of aliens, it is this one..but Supergirl and her team basically just tell us that anyone who is anti alien is some dumb nazi and per se evil. It is nuts as the point they are trying to push just does not mesh with this universe. Good writers could probably make a great story about how people can be welcoming even when they have every reason not to be, or show supergirl reflecting if all the literal aliens on this earth has really been a good thing for the people..but this show does not have good writers and you have cognitive dissonance watching the good guys trash people who would seem to have very good reasons not to like aliens..because they don’t like trump? It is putting a square peg in a round hole. This show had its chances..It should be better four seasons in. great lead actress cannot save terrible material. I gave it a thumbs up just for the characters and when it is goofy and fun. Just not enough of that.
