I'd never seen the original or any of the previous remakes until after this version, and I have the say that I prefer the 2018 one. Not only are the cast members just perfect for their roles in age, looks and even personalities which peek through, but the aesthetics of it are top notch. Location shots, costumes (especially those of F4 which really highlight the financial disparity between them and Shancai's friends), film quality, music and overall big budget feel really sets the tone and makes this a very modern show. Dylan Wang and Shen Yue have amazing on-screen chemistry, and their roles play to their strengths. Dylan's portrayal of a petulant rich kid who knows nothing about love at first had me hoping Shanchai would go running into the arms of the second male lead; however, when Daoming Si falls, he falls in an epic fashion with pure devotion and trust. Even his flaws become understandable when more of his backstory and family dynamics are revealed. Meanwhile Shen Yue manages to perfectly capture the down-to-earth Shancai who, despite modest looks and background, manages to capture the heart and transform the former bad boy. It's easy to see why he (and others) fall for her goodness and kindness. Is the story realistic? Not so much, but if I want realism, I'll check out the History Channel. This hits all the romantic spots in all the right places, and it's become one of my favorite shows to binge from time to time.
