Now what do you say when you rue the fact that the movie ended!
Some stories or rather I say some wines just taste like pure gold from your first sip. Andhadhun is just like that, a edge of the seat - intense - dark - subtle - true to the fact movie. Now I believe when you walk out of the hall after watching a movie and keep thinking of how the character did that or how is it possible but still subconsciously know what you have seen is most possibly the correct and appropriate version of story telling, the Director has delivered a classic. A classic which will grow in its stature with age. And as referred earlier like a wine which tastes good from the first sip, this wine actually grows on you and starts tasting even better. The sad part about is that it has to end at some point but it will make you crave for more.
I have been a huge fan of Sriram Raghavan from Ek Haseena Thi to Johnny Gaddar to Badlapur. The way he narrates you a story it's like you fall in love with even the negative characters which are not negative because they are written like that, they are grey because the situation demands them to be, coz they are humans after all. May it be Laik, Vikram, Karan and now Simi these characters are written to perfection there is hardly any scope to make them better. These is the advantage when you have a crisply written story-line with limitations to every character, no one is overtly used nor does any character fills the screen during the entire movie. I have seen a pattern don't know if others have observed SR doesn't have close-up shots which to the contrary of thrillers is utmost necessary may it be Stanley Kubrick, David Fincher or Alfred Hitchcock. These legends made you jump out of your seat with the extreme closeups but SR manages it without even that... You are a genius sir!!!
The struggles he shows are as real as they could get. Another part is perfect casting, the lead characters of his movies are out of the blue, everyone right from Saif - Urmila, NNM - Dharmendra, Varun - Nawaz and now Aayushmaan - Tabu, it feels the actors probably were meant for these roles.
Each character has a grey personality is supported by Frank story telling. Now SR has his supporting characters fixed which also seem perfect addition to the scripr.
Tabu is brilliant in the movie followed very closely by Aayushmaan. Both surrender to the character with honesty and play their parts to perfection. I was surprised that even though all SR movies have plenty to offer from his music, this one didn't live up with the story. Irony is the main prop of the movie is the piano. It should have had atleast delivered one smaash hit from the entire album. Music was the only link missing in this entire masterpiece. The subttly of using props keeps you in the movie throughout. As you know all the movies you have watched and liked have points wherein you are lost and some big moment brings you back to the movie. What SR does is that, he places these props at the exact time and keeps it edgy throughout ..
A movie which will make you proud as a lover of Bollywood thrillers, because I think it's par with any Hollywood movie. Dark comedy is the essence of the movie.
Just because of music 4 stars from me, screenplay is 8 out of 5, need to go and watch it in theatres.
