Review for first book only.
(New to Grishaverse)
A rather straightforward plot, with no plot mystery whatsoever. The adventure was also good, a few exciting scenes, but mostly improvisation and plot armor, with two plot holes I found.
The only redeeming factor was the characters and their backstories, which were rather short but stretched throughout the book. As for character development, only 2 of the 6 got any. The character's traits are also "told" and not "shown", which forces the readers to accept the characters as the author wants them.
Simple and easy to understand writing.
A few predictable twists and the world building is honestly pretty simple.
5 nations and 3 classifications of Grisha, with no explanation to what gives Grisha their powers or the development or classification in their power level. The government and/or royals were not introduced either, making you wonder how such a huge thing is passing right under their noses.
Taking liberties in criticism, at best a 4.2 out of 5 book, for an average level of fantasy fiction reader level.
World building: 3/5
Characters: 4/5
Plot depth: 3/5
Plot progression: pretty fast: 5/5
Plot twists: most were predictable: 4/5
Romance: 2 (3?) Ships, of which one sailed, sort of. They were pretty frustrating with their clashing thoughts but it was in character and cute. 3/5
PS: the ice court map was useless, imagined my own.
