I adore this film. Babylon is one of if not the most complex stories retelling old Hollywood I have ever seen, every detail is so well thought out. The difference between the party sequences for example, the first party the film opens with is, to be blunt, insane, but its glamorized through Manny and Nellie's eyes, terrible things are happening like the girl od-ing, yet we the viewer see it as an insane awesome party because that's how Manny and Nellie see it and remember it. Then the party that features Tobey Maguire is less excitingly terrifying and just, terrifyingly insane. Both parties feature the same song, that I doubt I can type on a Google review, but you know the one. At the first party, it is being sung by the amazing Lady Fay character, then at the Maguire party, it is playing much more low quality and quietly on the radio. The difference between these two parties is not that major, if the Manny that went to the Magiure's party went to Brad Pitt's party we might see it in a similar way because his innocence of excitement to be in Hollywood had faded. The difference could easily be a metaphor for how we view old Hollywood, glamorous parties where dreams come true, and while that was true for Manny and Nellei at the start, it became less and less of a dream come true by the end. And that is just an ounce of the incredible storytelling that Babylon has. It may be hard to grasp for most as this film can get written off as disgusting, but it is so not that, it is beautiful, it's raw, it was made with love and deserved to receive that love back.
