Just got back from Hellboy. It was.... okay. David Harbour does a good job in the titular role, especially with such big shoes left by Ron Perlman, though I felt he could be a bit too angsty at times.
I didn't care much for the supporting characters, primarily because I felt the ones chosen for the story are ones who are not significant to Hellboy's personal story. I would have preferred Abe Sapien, Liz Sherman, Roger the Homunculus or Kate Corrigan. I also felt their acting was too stiff, and the dialogue stilted.
I also didn't appreciate the family drama they shoved in between Hellboy and Prof. Bruttenholm.
I felt there was too much exposition, too much tell, not enough show. And the story was too fast paced, and they threw too much in, there were parts which I felt were wholly unnecessary to the plot and could have been cut out.
The action was decent, but an overabundance of it occurs in my opinion. An important part about Hellboy is that he is an investigator, there needs to be some quieter, more cerebral parts. A slower pace, and less action would make the film far better in my opinion.
In summation, if this were just any other supernatural action film, I would say it's good enough to at least give it a watch. But this is a Hellboy film, and in that regard I don't think it was very good.
