What a major disappointment the BBC’s production of War of The Worlds was.
When I first heard of this coming out & set during a period close to the book, I thought Great & I was genuinely looking forward to a show on tv for the first time in a long time But boy, how wrong was I & how badly the BBC had let me down with this rubbish.
It was easier to say what was right with it. The only piece I enjoyed was the tripods on the beach scene, which I felt offered some menace. I also quite liked the Tripods too. They were well designed & were the only thing with any character in the whole show. Didn’t see enough of them I’m afraid.
As for the human characters, they were bland, boring & acted out an awful script. Some fabulous actors were made to look amateurish.
The love story that was supposed to hold the whole show together was just utter tosh. I just didn’t feel anything for the main two characters at all, or any of the characters for that matter. I just wanted the aliens to get them out the way as quick as possible, so hopefully we’d see some action. Not so I’m afraid. The plodding, boring, emotionless story continued to the closing moments of the final episode.
The production, other than maybe the Tripods themselves, was terrible. The Martian Earth scenes felt as if they were done in my back garden through a red filter. The aliens were terribly designed & looked like a poor Doctor Who type CGI effort. How could they have built those tripods with just spikes at the end of their limbs?
So in summing up. Poor script, bad acting, terrible production. A complete cow pat of a show. Well done the BBC on taking on a story I loved as a boy, filled with menace & terror & produced this damp, limp, lame mess of a show. DVD would be straight to the 50p bargain bucket bin. The only good thing from it, The Tripods. Long live the Tripods!!!
