A devastatingly great film. I'm not surprised that the artist Gerhard Richter and some others were confused and disappointed. They miss the point. The life of this artist was a vehicle to convey one central point - finding a way to commemorate the lives of the countless millions savagely butchered in the heart of Europe in the middle of the twentieth century. A film about many things but above all the story of Elizabeth, murdered while so young innocent and beautiful. When the artist finally finds his vocation in his chosen genre, it is to give us her image, redeeming her memory and humanity. The director, by presenting us with this moment, offers hope that his nation, still tormented by inherited guilt for the evil inflicted upon Europe, can somehow find peace.
