Also, i don´t understand why some people say that sobieski "saved europe". Even if Vienna had fallen, there were still thousands of european cities unocupied. Do people really think that the capture of vienna would have resulted in the immediate capitulation of europe to the ottomans? Another common misconception is that the great turkish war was a war between the cross and the crescent. This is untrue, because neither the christian world or the muslim world were united against each other. For example, sobieski had muslims in his army, the lipka tartars, because the commonwealth was a multi ethnic nation. In fact, during the siege of vienna, Sobieski life was saved by a Lipka Tatar lieutenant Samuel Murza Krzeczowski. Sobieski later send a letter to wife where he says: "Our Tatars are entertaining themselves with falcons they have brought with them; they are guarding the prisoners, and are proving to be loyal and trustworthy" There were also christians who didn't supported the holy league.
