Superb, yes it elevates Tom Hank's stardom but why not. He is more than an actor in this film. He is a character that allows us to believe in the full goodness and courage of the human spirit. I am not sure anyone else could have done what he did for this film. His female co-star is superb. There are tales in Texas history passed down by oral tradition. One of them revolves around a young girl captured and released by the Indians.
