After an interesting beginning, the film becomes very full of itself and an extremely dull experience. The film isn't sure if it's trying to be literal or metaphorical, and just ends up a mess.
Sub plots involving extra marital affairs are presumably thrown in for the purposes of character development and exploration of deeper issues, but just feel tacked on instead. The visuals are interesting and there will be plenty who write essays outlining its brilliance, but it definitely suffers for trying be too clever for its own good.
For thought provoking and engaging Sci-fi, I highly recommend Arrival instead, which is a slow burn delight. The film has a lot to say without trying becoming over complicated for the sake if it, but really gets you thinking about the 'big questions'. The contrast in quality between Amy Adams and Natalie Portman's performances is also notable.
