Dinklage brought so much to the table with his role. I’ve always thought he was a tremendous actor but he especially killed it with this one. Something that stood out to me was the scene with the three soldiers writing letters. It tugged at my heart strings!
I do have to admit, I found the score to fall flat. In contrast to the eloquent letters written by Cyrano and his witty manner of speaking, the songs reminded me of Christian’s attempt at a love confession. I couldn’t distinguish one song from the other if you asked me to. Hell, I’m sure there were a few reprises in there but I would be none the wiser. All songs were of a similar key, with half-baked lyrics awkwardly jammed into bars which they didn’t fit. The duke’s song was especially grotesque. It felt like I was watching an evil cartoon character.
