Lewis Royer

Growing up I realized all of my favorite movies were directed by Tim Burton. I consider myself a die-hard fan of the original film and had high hopes for this sequel. I would say they were met at least half-way. Plenty of homages and tributes to the original film with some really awesome shots of the town and the afterworld. Yet I found myself wishing they had used the same cameras and subtlety as back then. The sets and costumes were great. But where I think the movie fell a little flat is on the plot line. Lydia hosting a paranormal TV show (now a psychic medium apparently) was difficult to believe for that character although Winona Ryder was absolutely believable in the role. These are the same two writers who introduced vampires and werewolves into the Addams Family universe with the series Wednesday which ultimately was little more than a high school drama. (sigh) This sequel is definitely worth watching but doesn't manage to capture the raw magic of the original relying a lot more on camera work and campy jokes that I don't think were quite as clever or believable. Finally, the score. Danny Elfman is my favorite composer without a doubt. The scene in the church where Lydia and Beetlejuice are to marry features a lip sync of "MacAurthers Park" which absolutely made no sense to me and went on for far too long. Donna Summer's version might have been a better fit. All in all its a nice tribute to the original but could have been better if it were kept more simple and true to it's storytelling style. Michael Keaton of course, was amazing. If I watch it again it will be for his performance and that of Winona Ryder. It could have been worse. 7/10

As a big fan of The Addams Family (1993) and Addams Family Values (1995) (and a lifelong Burton fan) I was optimistic yet sadly disappointed by this high school drama (ughhh) which gave virtually NO nods to those, the two most successful films of The Addams Family franchise and even audaciously enough introduces werewolves and vampires (among others) to The Addams Family universe. That was totally uncalled for. In my opinion part of The Addams Family's appeal has always been that their odd world (while often absurd) still has some relationship to reality which makes it more believable. I watched this series once but most likely won't watch it ever again. I'm hoping Tim Burton (who is still one of my heroes) does better with the Beetlejuice sequel as a feature film, but this series has done nothing to inspire confidence! For what it's worth Catherine Zeta Jones was a well cast Morticia. No Anjelica Huston, but she made sense and had the sort of elegance we have come to expect of a Morticia Addams. 3 stars for her, and because the series was watchable even if only once.

Great lighthearted and star studded film sure to brighten up a rainy or sick day.

Good show but the end was a disappointment.

Binged this whole thing in a night! Brilliant. I can't wait for the next season!
