In terms of cinematography alone, this is Guillermo del Toro’s best work yet. The visuals are visceral and surreal, although I wish they dialled down the CGI a little. The septia tuned hues of Toro's nightmarish pallete, crimson-laden snow and all the various colours of death, decay and decadence are exquisitely crafted on film. The visuals are psychedelic in that sense.
Nevertheless, the story is not as evocative or as enigmatic as Pan's Labyrinth was. You know how this one ends and it takes away from much of its impact. It's a beautiful and visually striking mess.
