Based on the season 1 premier this is top notch television. I wasn't too sure during the intro, it has the Tragically Hip's iconic song Ahead by a Century and a surrealist art style, I liked it but it was not what I was expecting.
As soon as that was over you take a deep dive into the past, of course a squeaky clean film like past. Like when you watch a 1950's period film and you never see old beater vehicles, every car you see is new, shiny, clean... I don't know why they can't get that one thing right. And of course they do a fantastic job on costumes but none look worn, they might look old, even sort of dirty but just never do they look properly worn. Sorry back to review
The acting is fantastic and as it should be Anne is the standout character. How she does this is marvellous, and once you are shown flashbacks of her difficult short life you are so invested in this character. Is there something not quite right with her? Well yes and no? Somehow she lacks reality, she comes across as overly intelligent and educated for an orphaned peasant. Her optimism and happiness don't seem to make much sense, though her more angry, sad, depressed moments do.
Overall the first 90 minute episode was nearly flawless in adapting a classic for a new generation. Great performances from all but Amybeth McNulty shines. Beautiful landscapes and scenery top it all off.
