I went to watch this movie with a few friends, none of us realising that there was a book or film before this. I noticed at the title screen those few devastating words at the bottom of the screen, "part one". With the knowledge that this movie was two and a half hours, I knew this would (unless it did the incredibly unlikely) bore me. And I wasn't wrong.
I would like to begin by saying, what was going on? As stated before I haven't seen or read anything about dune, and neither had the people I went with. After about the first hour I just had to know if either of them understood what was going on. Surprisingly, none of them knew either. This movie is an incomprehensible mess. A movie shouldn't require me or anyone else to have background knowledge on movie before I go and watch, which is where a lot of small details and nuances play a large role in keeping the story flowing. This is what causes this movies disconnect between the viewers who have only seen the large popularity of the film and no other knowledge compared to those who have a basic understanding of the world that Dune part one is set in.
I would also like to add that our small group was not the only ones feeling this way, never have I seen so many people and families move so much in one viewing. People were in and out of the screening at least 20+ times with one family going out twice due to the long and boring nature of the film.
Secondly, this movie is poorly told. I could not tell you any character other than Timothée Chalamet as Paul, as I checked the cast list after the movie to see if Josh Brollin really was in the movie, and Duncan by Jason Momoa who was the only semi-decent character who I liked. In general, these characters were basic, non-relatable, and I couldn't have cared about what happened to them.
Finally, this movie is an elaborate lie fuelled to bring in the masses. Nowhere is it specifically stated outside of a screening that this is Dune: part one, only that it is Dune. I find this quite disgusting as this highly impacts whether someone wants to watch a film or not and they know what they were doing by leaving it out.
Continuing with the lies of this film, Zendaya was a secondary character that appeared very minimally, only seen continuously with some lines in the last five minutes. With how heavily she was pushed in the advertisement, I was definitely expecting more screen time from Zendaya.
In general, I urge you not to watch this movie. For the absolute waste of time and money, a two year old child could have written a better feature length film in this time. Unless you have any understanding of the Dune lore, DO NOT WATCH THIS FILM!
