Okay being a need for speed fan this franchise gets me going and always excited for a new need for speed release title. Payback sounded like they had managed to get the mix right this time but once I got a chance to play this game I was highly disappointed, every need for speed game is compared to the benchmark of the classic Need for speed most wanted and underground 2 on PS2 days and those games were amazingly fun! They had a sense of pleasure playing and really got you attached to your one car you nursed from scratch to be a top sleeper car, the cop chases in original most wanted was fantastic really pushed your "driving skill" to really think of ways to escape with your car with all the amount of time spent modifying it. Fast forward to payback and it seems to be one step forward and 2 steps back, payback sounded like they might have had it together but for me the game just wasn't as good as I'd hope.
The game is not all bad there are some aspects that are good, like the cars available are good but not the best selections but still pretty decent, and the not so good just outweigh the good ones. Car customization is good I like they've brought back actual car modifications visually unlike previous need for speed where you felt you couldn't really do anything much to your car beside paint job. I won't say much about the story as it's a matter of whether you'll like it or not with self preference.
Now the disappointment of the game comes to the whole racing feel and cop chases which makes the need for speed game the game itself, after countless hours spent on the game and races I found them to be routine and really doesn't test the amount of time spent modifying your car's performance because it becomes irrelevant as I start to know when on the road I will be able to take the lead when AI cars seem to pull-back that for me just made races feel programed instead of testing each car's power and tune up. Cop chases are simply pathetic and the worst I've even seen, the cops just seem to be on your tail with their stupid normal cars compared to your maxed out tuned car which ruins the chase and no matter what you do you just can't seem to shake them off until a certain point on the road which again makes it seem programed when cops can drop out the chase instead of the car out running the cops like back on the original PS2 most wanted and to be honest that's the whole reason why we play need for speed to be those rebels on screen and tests the cops. Also with free roaming you literally left with nothing to do but just drive and can't pick up cop chases for the thrill of testing your cars power and that for me was a let down that cops are only available in races only and you can't just feel brave and pick a battle with a random cop driving by because there are no cops driving by.
