Great movie that brings the plight of an Asian-American teenager's basketball journey to the front row. As an AAPI, seeing representation on the big screen really impacted me (the main character portrayed by Taylor Takahashi is from the Bay Area like me), and I could relate to the plot given that we are not looked up to as anything other than the best medical professionals, being academically prolific and good food (as they mention in the movie). They also make a point that not every Asian family is well off, making 6+ figures and able to get their bills paid on time. His dream to make it big in the NBA and need to help provide for his family leave him at a crossroads to make a decision for himself that can benefit those around him. Hope to see a sequel that ties up the loose ends brought by the somewhat abrupt ending. I don't see why the reviews of this movie have to be so negative, but perhaps some of the non-AAPI critics (or those unfamiliar with our cultures) lack perspective and understanding from our point of view.
