The film is beautiful and tragic. I lost all respect for the old man when he talked about leaving his family behind and am a bit disappointed with the film trying to make me feel sorry for him. I would say his son died because he did not stick around to teach the boy his craft. But, I also get the sense that he regrets his choices - although he blames the sea spirits and not himself.
