As a boomer brought up on the holocaust I avoid "Jew stuff": too painful. But a friend lent me this film and I found it so beautiful and black and white photography so ideal that I was immune to the rage and pity of antisemitism and Israeli atrocities. I am left by the film with a sense of the futility of blame, whether of the church, the Soviets or even the Nazis. I can understand Ida's return to orders, Samsara does not have the intensity of devotion.
