Horrible writing and a disservice to the source material.
Popularity comes from a few things:
- hype creates rose glasses
- people are starved for adult fantasy entertainment
- high budget CGI and effects
- excellent casting
The writing, however, is mind numbingly bad and it spits on all the other adaptions and source comment.
