I saw this in 1963 in Japan and was transfixed by the cinematographic beauty and by Tatsuya Nakadai's performance, also a thing of beauty. The movie focused on the hypocrisy of the feudal code of the time, personal courage and cowardice, and one man's search for truth and justice. It is all-in-all an outstanding movie.
