Film is a visual medium. That said there is a saying in the theater: Spectacle and content don't often share the same stage (this can be applied to a number of things in life, politics included). This film's story could have been developed into a format similar to Star Wars or Dune, but simply didn't care enough about the story and characters.
Instead it quickly devolved into a Superhero type movie with over the top action sequences that actually divest you from caring about the characters. (Who cares about a character if he's virtually immortal, with the ability to do all sorts of advanced calisthenics and Deus Ex Machina surrounds them like a gaggle of guardian angels?) Picture the majesty of Star Wars or Dune and think "this could have been us, but you care too much about spectacle and reaching teenage demographics".
