It was a great melodrama and I didn't find it slow at all like other reviewers claimed. I'm a very impatient viewer. So impatient that I still haven't watched The Wire because the first episode is so boring. It even took me forever to get into Game of Thrones after forcing myself through the first couple episodes.
Spoilers:
It was so sad that the daughter, Veda, never grew out of her evil character traits. In the last episode it seemed she had finally grown up and wanted to reconcile with her mother, but in the end she proved herself to be more vile than we thought. I don't think she's completely to blame though. Monty, Mildred's lover, had clearly been grooming Veda from a very young age by having inappropriate conversations with her. We're never shown when the relationship between Veda and Monty became physical, but I wouldn't be surprised if he had touched her inappropriately as a child. He was such a sniveling weirdo who always put the blame for his actions on everyone else, but himself. When Mildred first broke up with him he made a comment about r*ping her before she pushed him off and ran away. I found it extremely unsettling and thought she was right to leave him. I was so disappointed when Mildred got back together with him (before she knew about him and Veda of course). It's such a sad sad ending. My heart breaks for these fictional characters. I'm still holding back tears.
I removed a star because Veda's character lacked depth. She was evil since she was a child with no explanation at all. Maybe the point is that she's just a true narcissistic sociopath, but that's just so sad.
