First of all, to the reviewer who said "if you don't know about the controversy surrounding this movie, well I'm not sure where you have been the last couple of weeks", I say we have been busy with ours jobs, taking care of our kids, and not worrying about what comes out of Brie Larson's mouth. Whatever she says or perceived to say about men isn't going to make our healthcare system better or worse. It isn't going to increase or decrease our taxes. It isn't going to fix US trade concerns with China or the trade war. It surely isn't going to solve the conflicts in the Middle East.
Now to the actual review. Overall, story is a bit bland but not terrible. The story is presented in an interesting way to take the audience along for the ride. Unfortunately, it might be a bit boring until you get to the 2nd half of the movie. The entire movie seems to be more interested in telling you how strong Captain Marvel is rather than telling a stunning story about Carol's path to becoming Captain Marvel even though this is a superhero origin story movie.
The special effects were pretty good as expected. There were a lot of callbacks to the 90s, perhaps a bit too much. The choice of music was pretty good. Assuming Larson wasn't told to specifically act the way she did, Larson's acting wasn't too great but wasn't too terrible either. Whatever she lacked though was made up by a wonderful supporting cast.
Overall, not Marvel's best movie but not exactly its worst either. I give it a 3/5, with 0/5 being the lowest and 5/5 being the highest. This is a thumbs up, albeit a weak one.
