I thought it was a very creative take on chinese mythology that utilizes the familiarity of folklore and adapted it to be a really well put together show that explores cultural heritage and personal identity from a generation to generation viewpoint.
Overall pretty good. You see some people saying how the depiction of folklore like Sun Wu Kong etc is not accurate when compared to the traditional depiction but that is not the point of the show.
The point of the show is to highlight the second generation experience in America. It is sort of a coming of age story but the main focus is on how one's cultural identity is skewed/ thrown out of harmony and balance due to the clashing of eastern and western traditions.
Sure there are some artistic liberties taken in order to adapt the show for western audiences, while at the same time preserve the essence of chinese culture and history. But that doesn't mean that the show is now awful because it doesn't line up with what people are used to seeing.
