I saw the original. There wasn't enough time to explore parenting of Hanna, her interaction with her father & how she navigated everyday life of a modern teenager (internet, texts, sexual promiscuity, drugs/alcohol, Cyberbullying & body image). The new series could have delved into that.
Instead it paralleled the original with a few exceptions. I concur about the ending. It purposely was being methodical & spinning suspension only to go near the end helter skelter wildly trying to stitch up an ending which was a madcap of fights & confusion.
Additionally it totally reversed the original's ending, mood lacking any info about the big bad group..
Biggest issue opened ended ?s Hanna with little to no money nor passports jumps around in matter of days through various countries, how? Meanwhile her father is stuck hidden away.
Why didn't her father's former military supervisor never tell him about his human smuggling operations? That could have easily gotten him & Hanna out of the country. Why didn't the CIA catch on to it?
Why didn't the father grow a beard or mustache even color his hair to change his appearance?
Pershaps instead of that ending they build up the first season to see her question her blind loyalty. See the outside world & her developed not just one but a few allies.
Her father did have some interaction with the outside world. The coats she wore in the beginning were well kept for her size. He had earned money & set it aside how?
Comparison between the two, major plots were twisted which changed the narrative. That bothered me as in the original Hannah & her father planned an assault & when ready set things in motion triggering a beacon. The big question throughout what was this planning for?
Here it seems it's Hanna that causes it all to disintegrate. It's her actions of wanting to go past the forest that have consequences. Her father's death & the others on his team, along with the CIA operatives who were following orders are dead as a result.
The other twist is the father lived & the villain died in the original. Here he dies & she lives. It doesn't make sense. How is Hanna & 249 going to develop? Although Hanna & 249 are highly intelligent they're also very autistic & lack social skills. I believe they should have done a 'Smallville'. The ending or climax should have been in the 2nd season. This should have added more twists & ended when Hanna left the airstrip
