It seems the major criticisms are from people who decry it as 'too woke'. It may not be a completely faithful adaptation, but that's just what it is - an adaptation, or even a 'reimagining'. They took liberties, yes, but who cares? Do we need one more by-the-book version of an old story? Instead, it's all about 'the journey' for our intrepid trio of adventurers. They are not the same by the end of the series as they are at the beginning. And that's just lovely.
I like what they did to make it feel relevant for a 21st century audience, including giving an eager young female journalist a chance to make HER name known rather than use a male byline, as was common practice. She is an excellent addition to the trio. And Fogg doesn't have to be the stiff upper lip stoic here - I rather like him as someone wildly unsuited for his journey, but willing to take the risk, find his inner strength under extreme duress (and with the help of his companions), and learn something along the way. David Tennant is absolutely PERFECT for this role. He gets to show his emotional range, comedic chops, and boundless energy. His other two companions are terrific, especially Leonie Benesch, who plays Abigail with spunk and compassion. It is such fun. It feels more like an epic film, with a soaring Hans Zimmer score to accompany the whirlwind of action. Highly recommended!!
