I was always waiting for the shoe to drop, a suspenseful film where the women are in the foreground and the men playing almost stereotypical background roles. Olivia Coleman does a master class of a complicated, flawed intellectual who can be despicable as can other complicated women, trapped in a man’s world with threatening, pervasive male behaviour. They are also all sympathetic as you watch male privilege and power dominate their lives. I left the film not liking anyone but a directionless beach boy and lady holding the purses at a dance.
