I cannot properly rate this movie, nor can I put it into a previously existing genre. It's not a horror, though it's not a thriller either. It's just a progressive series of increasingly disturbing scenes and actions disguised as a (poor) depiction of mental illness and relational strain. It is slow and tedious, sometimes with purpose, other times just to drag out a pending tragedy, with an overwhelming amount of ambiguity that makes you question if the director really knew what he was trying to get across. While the imagery was shocking and anything but predictable, the storyline became an extended yawn once we discovered the nature of what can only be described as a cult. The cinematography was brilliant and the acting was incredible, but the plot lacked purpose and comprehension, and honestly turned out to be a relatively lazy display of horrendous, shocking acts. I wouldn't say not to see this movie, but be warned that it's very visually disturbing, not a proper representation of mental illness (as much as it attempts to be) and will leave you wondering what the hell you just watched.
