I didn't start watching with great expectations. I enjoyed the 1995 version (which was around the last time I played MK). Felt the pacing and character introductions were much better in that version; this one seemed rushed. It was ridiculous that the 10th tournament was so soon, yet Raiden hadn't bothered to gather his champions so they would have enough time to train. Apparently, the Earth Realm champions weren't that hard to find. And Sonia earning her Dragon mark in one scene and apparently mastering her powers in the next was laughable.
I expect there is a director's cut being edited right now and we'll get a 4-hour version in six months to a year which which will be a much better story.
I did like the action scenes and cgi. It was a fun movie to kill some time with and didn't require any significant knowledge of the game or lore to enjoy it. I'm sure die-hard MK fans got lots of easter eggs. I would watch a sequel if one is made, but they kind of left the ending open, so who knows?
