My daughter and I love the Descendants movies (the second one is our favorite). We have been looking forward to the Descendants 3 movie all summer. Uma, at the end of the second movie left us excited for more of the good vs. bad. We couldn't wait to see which of the VK's would get chosen to come to Auradon and who the villain would be in this movie. I hate to say it, but I was very disappointed in Descendants 3!
The beginning with the 'It's Good to be Bad' song, the four main characters dancing back on the Isle of the Lost and choosing the VK's going to Auradon was the best part of the movie. I actually feel bad for the ones chosen to go to Auradon-Dizzy, Celia and the twins as they had very little to do with the movie storyline. Poor Dizzy. I thought after D2 that she would be taken under Evie's wing in Auradon and there would at least be a small story line for her. Dizzy deserved more than just sleeping on a couch and eating cake! The trailers led us to believe that Celia, daughter of Dr. Facilier would have a story line but she basically hid in the background. The story did not even need the other four VK children because they did not add to the plot. Speaking of plots...this story was very scattered especially for those of us who have watched the first two Descendants movies.
First, I do commend the recognition to Cameron Boyce at the beginning and end of the movie. I was so sorry to hear of his passing. He had so much talent and I was looking forward to seeing him in future work.
Now back to the movie, the scenes and backgrounds seemed very fake. I don't know where they filmed but it was not the same realism as in D1 and D2. The story was very scattered and seemed rushed to get to the end. I didn't think any of the main characters really got to grow or develop their role. J and Carlos hardly had any speaking lines. Audrey shows up and has turned 'bad' and she wasn't even in D2. What did Jane's birthday have to do with anything? Where was Lonnie? Ben turns into a beast for five minutes? Hades was thrown in there but didn't have a big role. Nothing seemed connected.
I was looking forward to the chosen VK kids to have more of a role along with the original four and then the people of Auradon would see that all people are inherently good. I also hoped to see the parents of the original four somehow play a role in D3. I think all of the main actors are fantastic but their characters were lost in this film. I appreciated all of the choreography and the work of Kenny Ortega. The songs were not bad, but not something memorable. I know other than 'It's Good to be Bad', my daughter will not be singing or dancing to any of the other songs.
It appears this may be the end of a trilogy. I hope not. I love the idea of the Descendants, the good vs. bad and I feel like there is much more of a story that can and should be developed into a Descendants 4 movie.
My daughter and I have watched D1 and D2 over and over. Sadly, it will not be the same with D3.
