They really butchered the book. Why does the timeline jump all over the place? If you hadn't read the book, this would be very confusing. 9 episodes is a lot of time for character development, and you still have no idea who most of these people are. Such limited back story. The mini series with Rob Lowe & Gary Sinese was so much better, despite the fact that I still feel that Molly Ringwald was a terrible choice to play Frannie. Just go read the book, extended version, so you get "the kid" One of the best characters in the book, and totally left out of all the tv iterations.
