Any brits reading will understand the metaphor. This is most definitely a marmite movie. judge for yourselves from the other reviews.
The first showing in the 90s was cut so thin that the full length version is the only palatable way to watch this. Avoid the short-cut. That was why it got panned.
The plot rehashes ripley's loneliness from finding out once again that her daughter has died (surrogate child from aliens) And her potential love interest (was refreshing to have her catch feels with a guy without bumping uglies on screen) dies too. This is all through exposition...
So this is an amalgam of alien (single creature picking off one at a time) with more character development with ripley like we experienced in aliens.
It's done with style, finesse and grunge. This is one of my favourite futurisms where we see the future already in its state of decay. Aesthetic reasons only, i'd prefer my actual future a bit cleaner. The cast is placed well with many british staples filling out the place with grit, sarcasm and spite. It feels real with them making the echoes around the place ring out with screams from cream of the crop supporting actors. I defy you to doubt their believability. If anything, the one letting the side down was ms weaver but only by a little and only by comparison.
Acting, casting, cramp and greasy location - chefs kiss
Ok the bad. The cgi wasnt first rate even for the 90s. Animation of the creature is passable but the colour matching is inconsistent. Thankfully, they don't overdo the creature and most closeups keep it real with all the expected blood curdling horror of the beast.
I know some people think alien was perfect but lets be frank. first moment when you see that little guy poking out of his chest was a bit comical. you forgave and this deserves forgiveness for similar reasons.
Once again, the final say on the cut wrecked a very well put together film with quite egregious editing that removed too much function in the film and stripped it too thin just to meet some arbitrary time limit. don't blame production. oh... and the bit at the end.....avoid the short version at all costs as it will taint your view of a fantastic film, underrated and misunderstood.
